a small update

Hey there! You may have noticed I’ve made some cosmetic changes to the blog, including to my archives page. Gotta make tweaks every now and then to keep from getting bored, right? 🙂

And, if you liked my cross-stitch post, I’ve created a new blog dedicated entirely to my cross-stitch projects! You can check it out by clicking the widget in my sidebar. I’ll definitely be making some design tweaks to that blog as well in the future, but for now I just wanted to get it up and running.

october blogging challenge 4: explain the story behind your blog name

In my closet, nestled with some folders with things like “student loans” and “401(k)” written on them, is–you guessed it–a purple notebook.

This notebook is full of what I call “bits”–random pieces of writing, mostly dialogue or interior monologue, most without any sort of context.

See, I’ve always fancied myself as somewhat of a writer, ever since I wrote my first “book” in elementary school. (I wrote a story about two dogs that get lost and find their way back home–original, right?) On and off throughout my life I’ve always grabbed onto and given up on the idea of someday writing a novel.

Anyways, whether I’m a “writer” or not I’ve always got ideas swirling about in my head. Ideas for plots, turns of phrases, witty dialogue (I think it’s witty, anyway, or is that a bit conceited?), etc. And these ideas, these bits of prose, even a small poem now and then, get put into my purple notebook, whether they are part of a larger story or not (some are, but most aren’t).

The reason I named this blog after my writing notebook is because I started it with the idea of pushing myself as a writer, of going beyond the bits in a notebook. In the beginning I even shared some of these bits on the blog, but I began to get a bit too embarrassed about that so I stopped. (And don’t try to go back and find them, either–I deleted them.)

Do you have a blog? How did you come up with your blog’s name? Do you keep a writing notebook?

reasons i’m excited to move to new york

Via Tamara Peterson

You guys, everything about my move has fallen into place so quickly. When I first left my job in order to pursue my dream of moving to New York City, I didn’t have a job or a place to stay. What was supposed to be a few weeks of staying with  my mom turned into a few months, a couple of possible living situations fell through, and there was more than one moment of panic and doubt.

But even though I took a ready-fire-aim approach, in the last couple of weeks I just got so lucky and everything is set! I now have employment and a place to stay (albeit a temporary one, but it’s still nice to have a place to set your coffee maker). Also, can I just give a shout-out to my parents for being so awesome and supportive of the fact that their daughter made a big, reckless (and possibly stupid–we shall see) decision to leave gainful employment so she could move to a new city for no apparent reason? Thanks M and D!

So, here’s to a new life and a new layout! (Do you like?) I hop on my plane tomorrow, and here’s some of the reasons I’m looking forward to landing in NYC!

  1. Having actual New York cheesecake.
  2. Trying everything on this list.
  3. The beautiful photo ops.
  4. All the cool locally owned coffee shops I’m gonna find.
  5. NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY. (cough*geek*cough)
  6. Spider-Man lives there.

Let’s Catch Up

Hello, remember me? I used to blog here. When I came back home for the summer, I thought, This is great! I’ll have so much more time to put into blogging.

Well, as you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t exactly been doing that. And rather than force it, I’ve decided to just take the blogging thing slow for a bit. But, that doesn’t mean I won’t pop in to catch up every now and then! So here’s what I’ve been up to lately:

  1. Outdoor theater. Which is a little different from indoor theater. And by different I mean muddier. I am loving it though, and it’s given me a bit of a tan. (As tan as a ginger can get, anyway.)
  2. New glasses! I have officially made the switch from contacts. Not only does that save me money, it also puts me one step closer to becoming a hipster.
  3. Rereading Louise Rennison’s Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series. Even after reading them for the first time ten years ago (wow I am old), these books still crack me up.
  4. Doctor Who. Thank goodness for BBC America and a DVR. And David Tennant’s hair.
  5. And I may or may not have been planning some things that concern this little ol’ blog of mine. Stay tuned!

What have you been up to lately?

Snow and Silence

It snowed yesterday. In April, can you believe that?

I know I’ve been pretty silent in this space lately. So much has been going on that I haven’t been able to give my little ol’ blog the attention I would like to. And I may have to be silent for a bit longer. But never fret, I will be back soon(ish) enough with my cocktail of the month and an announcement! Stay tuned…
