october blogging challenge 27: top tips for a new blogger

So, I’m probably not the best person to take blogging advice from; I only get a few hits a day, and even though I’ve been blogging for over a year I’m still not quite sure what I’m doing with it most of the time. But I guess there are a few things I’ve learned in that year that could come in handy to others:

1. Read other blogs. Lots of them. This is pretty typical advice for anyone who wants to be any type of writer; read the kinds of things you want to write. You’ll find out what catches your attention, what works and what doesn’t, and other blogs can be a good source of inspiration.

2. Reach out to other bloggers. Most bloggers love to hear from their readers, so don’t be afraid to shoot them a message to ask for advice! Especially bloggers who have been at it for a while and have a large readership; they can give you great insight.

3. Don’t think, just do. I mean, do think a little, the internet is permanent after all. What I mean is, if you’re thinking of starting a blog but aren’t sure if you’re “ready,” just start one! You learn by doing; besides, no one’s blog is perfect from the get-go, and a lot of blogs evolve and change over time. There’s nothing wrong with figuring it out as you go along.

4. Ignore advice. In the end, only you can decide what’s right for you. And depending on what your blogging objectives are, some popular advice might not even apply to you.

If you’ve just started blogging or are thinking of staring a blog, are these tips helpful? If you’ve been blogging for a while, what advice would you give to a new blogger?

  1. Agree with number 3- just do! And if you do, I thinkit’s easier if you’re just open about having a blog. People are supportive and helpful in tips for blog ideas! Plus people relate easier if they know who they’re reading 🙂
