When most people think of autumn, they think of pumpkin-flavored things or leaf crunching, not “let’s go to the beach!” But go to the beach I did, on what was possibly the most perfectly autumnal day.

If you like solitude, Rockaway Beach on a Monday in late September is your place. I walked in the sand, watched some surfers from a distance, climbed on a rock and sat on the boardwalk reading and eating the granola bar I had stashed in my bag.

Even though it’s too cold for swimming, I think I prefer hanging on the beach in autumn over summer. Then again, I prefer anything that doesn’t involve large crowds and sweating.
